CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

From the corner of his eye, Kasey saw Isaac fall to the deck hard. Before he knew what he was doing, Kasey had drawn his pistol and fired four times at the newcomer, dropping him.

He ran to Isaac and was relieved to see him already getting back up. The shield belt had done its job, but a plasma rifle had still knocked the wind out of him. He helped Isaac to his feet.

“Sorry, that guy was stunned and tied up, but apparently not well enough. Keep an eye on the entry, I’ll sort this out.”

“Aye, sir.” Kasey noticed Isaac’s gaze going to check on Yaran, who smiled back at the man, before ordering his one remaining bot into the hallway with him.

AnnaChi had removed the other’s restraints and he realized Jate and Knoc were both in bad shape but alive and stable. He removed the medical kit and handed it to AnnaChi. She knew more about what was needed than he would, and Jate seemed conscious enough to direct if needed.

They rounded up the weapons and reassembled the parts Isaac’s bots had broken down. No one would get into the bridge now without getting a face full of plasma.

AnnaChi stood. “Grab me a stim and let’s go clear engineering of rodents.”

He tossed her the pill case, knowing she would not be left behind. “Alright, we make a plan on the way. Isaac thinks there are two in engineering, at least. You, me, and Isaac should be able to handle them. The tween deck has lots of engineering connections—too many for them to watch.

“You’re forgetting the forward armory is on the way. Isaac and I will armor up and I can switch this piece of crap for my normal kit.”

“Sir,” one of the men Kasey recognized as an engineer named Griff spoke up, “I think you need me with you too. I’m not certified on system core maintenance, but I may know enough to help get us back online.”

“Can you shoot straight?”

“Not too good with a gun, no. But I know which end should point which direction.”

“Fine, make sure that end is pointed away from us too.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Jate, have them seal the bridge until you hear from us.”

“We got this, sir. Go take back the ship. I wish I could join ya.”

“Me too. If we can get our system back online, we will need everyone here that is able to be on the cameras and detection. We need to know who else is on our ship.”

“Got it.”

The forward armory was nowhere near fully stocked. It was a minor issue with the ship’s current complement, but once fully staffed it could be an issue. It would be another expensive order once they were back in Belrothi’s orbit. For now, there was enough for the four of them, but not much more. Griff ended up with a kit reserved for Kasey.

The tween deck access was mainly from the engineering sections, but other areas had less convenient access hatches. That was fine for the four of them, but the maid bot would need to stay behind.
